I am pleased to report you my latest Southern Blue Fin Tuna fishing trip to Portland.

Status of Southern Blue Fin Tuna in Australia
Firstly, I would like to advise you the status of Southern Blue Fin Tuna in Australia.
As you know Southern Blue Fin Tuna is the highest value Tuna species as same as Northern Blue Fin Tuna.
There is a fact that almost all captured Southern Blue Fin Tuna are exported to Japan.
Even though there are some high qualities Sushi Bar in Melbourne, the Nigiri is rare to see moreover, I have never seen the fillet is selling at any sea food markets in Melbourne at all.
It is true and really annoying for we, Japanese that most of all foreigners (at least in Australia) cannot identify the taste of Tuna even if they can eat Sashimi. Moreover, fillet of Salmon and Tuna which is lean fish, are same for them.
Overall, it is natural that Japanese people import a lot of Tuna from all over the world. Because, we are the most understanding people about value of Tuna even if a few radical organizations claim us.

Fishing
I went to Portland try to get Southern Blue Fin Tuna by chartering boat with my Asian fishing mates on last weekend.
Portland is famous for Southern Blue Fin fishing, in the peak season from late March to early Jun so many anglers come to the town from Melbourne or somewhere else.
The town is located 400km southern west of Melbourne. Generally, it takes about 4hour 30minutes.
Therefore, we left from Melbourne on Friday midnight 2AM it reminds me my Japanese university’s fishing trip days that I used to go fishing at such a weird time without any sleeping.

After the long way we reached Portland just before at 6AM. After some break finally, we went out to sea with Mathew hunt’s charter boat.

It was still early season of the Tuna, thus we need to go far point than usual (1hour and 30min voyage with full speed of a cruiser).
When we entered the fishing area, we could see so many birds mountain.

However, all of these were caused by Dolphins or Seals that means there wasn’t any Tuna the around.
After over 2hours cruised, eventually, we could find a group of Southern Blue Fin Tuna.
But, it was really tough. First of all they didn’t react to trolling lures at all, and jig as well.
So, we started sight fishing by drifting the boat. Then, one of fiends hooked up by using soft plastic lure. But he missed. With some sets of try finally, the other friend fished on.

At last the valuable fish appeared on the boat!

About 15kg, 100cm.

We kept trying with this method but we could not catch further one.

In my guess, our boat lost the opportunity during the best time for the Tuna when until around 10 o’clock. Therefore, it was too late when we found the group, because the Tuna were filled with bait already.

Owe to his caught in such a severe condition, we could enjoy Sashimi party night!
